Theme: “Unmasking the Appeal – Tobacco Kills: Be Smart, Don’t Start”
Date: 29th May 2025
Venue: Scottish High International School
Each year, millions of lives are lost to tobacco use—lives that could have been saved. On 29th May 2025, just a day before the school closed for summer break, Scottish High International School came together to observe World No Tobacco Day with purpose and passion.
The theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Tobacco Kills: Be Smart, Don’t Start,” resonated strongly with our students and teachers and staff, especially in an age where the tobacco industry continues to target young minds through clever marketing and flavored products that are addictive.
The day began with a powerful gesture—our Health Champions visited classrooms from Grades IX to XII, where they initiated conversations around tobacco use and led students in taking a heartfelt pledge to say no to all forms of tobacco. The message was simple but strong: Don’t get trapped by the tactics of the tobacco industry, peer pressure or curiosity. Choose health. Choose life.
This was followed by a wide range of student-led activities that were both informative and moving. Students designed posters and digital creatives that captured the harsh truths of tobacco addiction. Others worked in teams to produce audio-visual presentations, spreading awareness in a format that was both relatable and impactful.
One of the most stirring moments of the day came when a group of students performed a short drama, illustrating the suffering of families affected by tobacco use. Their performance portrayed not just the physical toll, but also the emotional and financial struggles—especially of those who are passive smokers. The silence in the classrooms said it all; the message had struck a chord.
Beyond performances, the most valuable moments were perhaps the ones that happened in classrooms. Teachers facilitated open discussions around how tobacco remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths globally. Students talked about how the tobacco industry subtly targets the youth and why it’s important to resist these influences. There was a clear takeaway: awareness is the first step to prevention.
They also discussed the importance of supporting family members and friends who want to quit. Quitting is not easy, but with the right help—be it counseling, medication, or simply someone to talk to—it is possible.
In his message, Principal Dr. Sanjay Sachdeva praised the commitment and creativity of the students. He encouraged everyone to extend their awareness campaigns beyond the school walls, making use of social media to reach a wider audience. He emphasized the importance of spreading awareness and urged the students to become change-makers in their communities.
In Conclusion World No Tobacco Day at Scottish High was more than just an event—it was a reminder of the power young people hold to influence change. Through stories, creativity, and heartfelt conversations, our students showed that they are not just aware—they are ready to take action.
Because every step counts, and every voice matters in the journey toward a healthier, tobacco- free world.
