Alexandra Snee visited Scottish high to deliver an expert talk on one of the topics in Psychology – Obedience.
The audience was grade 11 and 12 IBDP students studying ESS, BM, Eco, Political Science and faculty members. ISC Psychology students of grade 12 were also included.
This was also an interdisciplinary talk keeping in mind the IBDP curriculum requirements. Alexandra is a psychology graduate of Leeds University, UK and currently working in India representing University of Roehampton, UK.
The session gave students a taste of university-level Psychology study. It explored the concept of Obedience under the central idea; Are humans inherently prone to Evil?
Initially, the presentation started with a brief outline of Nature vs Nurture debate in Psychology. Following this the question was posed “Are people inherently evil” and the class debated on this for a short time. This then leads to the delivery of Milgram (1962) study on obedience. Finally to be summarized with an evaluation of the study and human behaviour. The Nature vs Nurture debate in Psychology involves biology and role of genetic predisposition to crime.
Are people inherently evil? Is also a TOK food for thought.
